SECURITY, DEMOCRACY & CITIES CONFERENCE
Given the evolution of the sanitary crisis and lingering uncertainties about travel restrictions, we have decided to postpone our “Security, Democracy & Cities” international conference, initially scheduled on 25, 26 and 27 November 2020. In order to receive you in the best conditions and ensure seamless European and international attendance, we invite you to join us in the spring of 2021. We will inform you of the dates as soon as possible.

EXCHANGES BETWEEN CITIES
The series of 14 webconferences that Efus organised over a period of seven weeks in April and May was aimed at responding to the strong need expressed by our members and partners to communicate and exchange on our work topics during lockdown. Indeed, more than a thousand of you attended these online meetings. Efus wishes to thank all the contributors to these debates, which we have decided to hold regularly from now on.

>>> Our upcoming web conferences:

  • How can local and regional authorities encourage young people to get involved in promoting solidarity and combatting discrimination? - 2 July - 2pm
  • The impact of Covid-19 crisis on the security of senior citizens - 9 July, 2pm

DISCRIMINATORY VIOLENCE

The LOUD (Local Young Leaders for Inclusion) project delivered its third online webinar on 20 May with a presentation by Kelsey Bjornsgaard, Senior Adviser at the London-based Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) specialised in the prevention of extremism, on how to fully use the potential of social media to boost an alternative narrative communication campaign.

THE CITY AT NIGHT

Now that most European cities are gradually lifting lockdown measures, what will the post-Covid nightlife be like? What challenges does this novel situation pose to European cities? How to combine nightlife with the necessary safety precautions? Efus and its long time partner the Nightlife Platform (Plateforme de la Vie Nocturne) held two online working sessions on 25 and 27 May.

CRISIS MANAGEMENT

Local authorities have been on the front line managing problems of public order, sanitary assistance, social support, mobility and protection of vulnerable people caused by Covid-19. The sanitary crisis has highlighted the importance of emergency planning, which was the theme of a webconference organised by Efus on 4 June that drew 66 attendees.

PUBLIC SPACES

In charge of local security in Xàbia (ES), Jose Monfort Pons and Fernando Gaona de Sande describe the exceptional measures put in place for the summer season in the context of Covid. A highly sought-after tourist destination situated on the Costa Blanca, Xàbia is also a partner city in the PACTESUR European project on the security of public spaces against terrorism.
The PRoTECT project on the protection of public spaces against terrorism is organising its second seminar on 15 to 17 July through videoconference. It will include exchanges on the best practices and technologies developed by law enforcement agencies, local authorities, European projects and the private sector. The project's five partner cities will share their experience in using the PRoTECT tool to select a solution for demonstration. Registration is free and mandatory.

>>>>> OUR UPCOMING EVENTS

Efus' working group on Security & Innovation is holding a series of webconferences. The first one was held today (25 June) and included a contribution from the Cutting Crime Impact (CCI) project, in which Efus is a partner. The next one about "Civic technologies in urban security: what cooperation between citizens, police and local authorities?", will be held on 21 July at 11am CEST. A third session on facial recognition will be held on 18 September. Registration is free and mandatory.

>>>>> FACT SHEET

Crime prevention through urban design and planning must embed the protection of human rights within the design of new urban equipments in order to foster civic behaviour and prevent the stigmatisation of some urban areas and groups of population. This fact sheet was produced by the Cutting Crime Impact (CCI) project.
