Portugal has taken over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union on 1 January until 30 June at a time of unprecedented crisis, with Member States still reeling from the Covid-19 pandemic. The European SHINE project on the mitigation and prevention of sexual harassment in nightlife entertainment spots, led by the Lithuanian Centre for Crime Prevention and in which Efus is a partner, established an Advisory Board in February tasked with ensuring the project’s results reflect European diversity and build on existing knowledge and promising practices.

Rigorously assessing the degree of vulnerability of urban public spaces, in particular ‘soft targets’ such as commercial, cultural, and sport venues, or public transport, is a top priority for many European cities. As part of the PRoTECT project, Efus is organising a series of web conferences, the first of which was held on 17 February. | |

In this interview, two PACTESUR project partners, the cities of Turin and of Edinburgh, discuss the opportunities and challenges presented by the use of drones to protect public spaces. | | | |

IcARUS' second coordination meeting was held on 18 and 19 February and gathered the 18 consortium members. The six partner cities presented their priorities and challenges in the four areas covered by the project, i.e. juvenile delinquency, radicalisation, public spaces, and trafficking and organised crime. The consortium also discussed social and technological innovation in urban security. A brainstorming exercise was organised to prepare the training sessions on the Design Thinking methodology, which are scheduled in early March 2021.

As part of its on-going work on the use of technologies for security, Efus took part in a symposium on “Data and the Public Order – From descriptive to prescriptive practices” organised by the University of Groningen, Campus Fryslan (Germany), on 11 February. | | | |

The alternative discourse campaigns created by young people from the nine LOUD project (Young local leaders for inclusion) partner local authorities, which is led by Efus, are about to be finalised and will soon be disseminated. Posters, videos, songs… each campaign sends out a positive message against discrimination, marginalisation and intolerance. | | | |

The non-governmental organisation Save the Children Romania launched jointly with the Romania Safe Internet Centre a campaign to raise awareness among young people on cyber-bullying, titled “A world without fear”. This practice sheet was produced by the BeSecure FeelSecure (BSFS) project. | | | |
