The Belgian Forum for Prevention and Urban Security (BeFUS) celebrated its 25th anniversary with an online symposium on methodologies and local political strategies aimed at improving citizens’ feeling of security, on 21 January. BeFUS invited Efus to take part in this event in line with its objective of strengthening exchanges between Belgian local and regional authorities with their peers from other European countries.

ADVOCACY

Meeting between Efus and the President of the European Committee of the Regions
Willy Demeyer, Mayor of the City of Liège (BE) and President of Efus, and Elizabeth Johnston (Executive Director), met with Apostolos Tzitzikostas, President of the European Committee of the Regions, in January. During the virtual meeting, they discussed how the two organisations could collaborate on issues of concern for European local and regional authorities, such as the prevention of radicalisation and the protection of public spaces. Efus also presented the work conducted by the Partnership on the security of public spaces, which it leads together with the Cities of Nice and Madrid.

INNOVATION & TECHNOLOGY

Over the past few months, Efus’ working group on Security & Innovation organised three web conferences on technological and social innovation in the realm of urban security. We draw the main takeaways from these exchanges, which covered themes as varied as the measure of feelings of insecurity and the use of drones to protect public spaces.

AUDITS & METHODOLOGY

The Cutting Crime Impact (CCI) project, led by the University of Salford and in which Efus is a partner, conducted a preliminary assessment of the toolkits it has developed to reduce the impact of petty crime during a meeting of its Advisory Board held online on 27-28 January.

CRISIS MANAGEMENT

In response to increasingly complex issues of civil security, Efus has been participating for a decade or so in projects aimed at raising awareness and training and representing local elected officials in order to improve local and emergency responses to major accidents, but also, more recently, daily cooperation in the border area between France and Belgium.

PUBLIC SPACES

Officially launched in December, the new Efus-led Secu4All project started in earnest on 26 January with the (online) kick-off meeting. The partners exchanged on the project's objectives – to strengthen the capacities of local and regional authorities in protecting public spaces and soft targets –, the training offered through the project, and the challenges they face in their territory.

The Partnership on the security of public spaces of the Urban Agenda for the European Union, which is led by the cities of Nice (France) and Madrid (Spain) and Efus, explored the synergies between its work and current EU and UN-Habitat programmes and initiatives during a meeting held online with representatives of these two organisations, on 27 and 28 January.

>>>>> PRACTICE SHEETS

Initiated many years ago, the Fan Coaching-Eurofan scheme of the municipality of Liège and the Standard football club accompanies supporters with the objective of preventing troubles at matches. This practice sheet was produced by the MATCH-SPORT project.
A new unit dedicated to crime prevention and public tranquility was recently set up in the 7th district of Budapest, the capital of Hungary.

>>>>> DID YOU KNOW?

Published at the end of Efus' last international conference, held in Barcelona in 2017, the Security, Democracy and Cities - Co-producing urban security policies Manifesto expresses the principles on which Efus and its members base their work. It will be the basis of our exchanges during our upcoming international conference, to be held on 20, 21 & 22 October 2021 in Nice (FR).
